Detroit Public Schools Tuesday announced the purchase of 40,000 new laptop computers for students grades 6th through 12th.

School Board President Anthony Adams joined Emergency Financial Manager Robert Bobb for the announcement.

"This technology purchase today represents a tremendous leap forward for DPS, because we now have the tools to compete in the global economy," Adams said.

"Our kids now have the opportuniy, during the day, to work in a computer-based learning envirnment," he said.

Bobb stressted that the laptops are for in-school use only.

"In the interest of safety, we will not be allowing students to take the netbooks home. But they will be available to them all day while they are in school and participaing in after-school programs," Bobb said.

The district is using federal stimulus grant funding to purchase netbooks, desktop computers and printer/scanners for every classroom.

The new equipment is expected to arrive within a few weeks.
