GM Launching Major Scholarship Program

DETROIT (WWJ) General Motors has launched one of the nation's largest scholarship programs. CEO Dan Ackerson says the $4.5 million dollar "Buick Achievers" program will help hundreds of students.

"We hope to benefit from this, but we first and foremost hope that some of the young veterans, women, minorities and people that don't come from such affluent backgrounds can benefit," says Ackerson.

'Buick Achievers' scholarship will reward 1,100 students around the country. Ackerson says he hopes many of the student who get the scholarship will someday work in the auto industry.

"We hope  some of these young, truly I hope they will pursue careers in the automotive industry, that may benefit GM specifically but it will benefit the industry more generally," states Ackerson.

The GM Foundation is funding the program.
