Jury Convicts Husband In Stabbing Death Of Wife

DETROIT (WWJ) - It took just 90 minutes for an Oakland County Circuit Court jury to convict a man of stabbing his wife to death, even though the defendant claimed he did it in self-defense.

Ellery Bennett testified he only killed his Lisa because she was coming at him with a knife and he feared for his life.

Obviously, the jury didn't buy his story. Now, the 47 year-old West Bloomfield man is facing mandatory life in prison, no parole, when he's sentenced next month.

Forty-six year-old Lisa Bennett was a drug company sales representative.

Prosecutors said she had filed for divorce one week before the killing and that Ellery Bennett couldn't stand the thought of being separated from his daughter in a custody fight.
