Wayne County Student Scholars

Detroit  (WWJ) -   A Wayne County program offers hope for high students who need help paying for college education.  Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano this week is awarding 40 thousand dollars in scholarships through his hope foundation.

"We had about 230 students apply for the scholarships this year," said Ficano.   "80 of them will receive 500 dollar scholarships.   We have given away more than 300 thousand dollars in scholarships since we started the program in 2005."

Ficano says the students had to write an essay and maintain a minimum grade point average of 3 point 0 to qualify for the scholarship.   And with the rising cost of  higher education,  Ficano adds that the scholarhips are in greater deamdn than ever.   The scholarships are funded through private donations.
