Investigators: Smoldering Cigarette Caused Fatal Fire

CASCO TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - The St. Clair County sheriff's department has identified a woman and an infant killed in a mobile home fire this week.

Thirty-year-old Carolene Fry and her 10-month-old daughter, Nina Fry, died in the fire.

Four-year-old twins Todd and Kaitlynn Fry survived and are being treated for smoke inhalation at Children's Hospital of Detroit.

Neighbors called 911 after smelling smoke around 9:30 pm Wednesday at the Americana Estates mobile home park on the Macomb-St.Clair County line in Casco Township.

Investigators said the fire was caused by a smoldering cigarette on a couch cushion.

Police said the cigarette had been purchased in another state, as those sold in Michigan are required to be non-smoldering.
