Alumni Donate Millions To NMU

MARQUETTE (WWJ) - Northern Michigan University said it's getting a $5 million gift, the largest in the school's history.

The Marquette school announced that alumnus John Berry and his wife, Shirley, had committed the money to the NMU Foundation.

The couple pledged $1 million in cash to endow a scholarship called the Berry Scholarship and $4 million in estate gifts.

The aim of their donation is to help the school recruit high-achieving students.

Berry also contributed the school's second-largest gift with $2 million to support construction and naming of the Berry Events Center.
