Emagine Theaters Introduce D-Box Motion Seats

DETROIT (WWJ) - It could be a bumpy ride at the box office this summer. That's because D-Box gyrating seats are appearing in all of the local Emagine Theaters.

Spokeswoman Ruth Daniels said the experience will make moviegoers think they are actually in the movie.

"The D-Box motion seats are very cool. It makes you feel as if you are in the movie. It's kind of like a ride at Disney World or Cedar Point. And for the right movie, it's a great experience," Daniels said.

Daniels said all of the Emagine Theaters in the Metro Detroit Area now have the special red seats and they're perfect for action adventure films.

"[The seats] look different than the others, it vibrates with sound, so its more like a simulation ride, I guess is what you would call it. For instance, if you're going over bumps, if you're in a bumpy plane [in the movie], you might feel like you're in that bumpy plane. It's not through every  minute of the movie but it basically makes you feel like your inside the action," Daniels said.

The last feature film to feature the D-Box motion technology was "Fast Five," the newest movie to "The Fast and the Furious" series.

"They pick out just the right spots to do it on so it's not like you're shaking the whole time you're in the movie. Because that would be a little annoying if it was two hours," Daniels said.

There is a premium price tag associated with the D-Box seating -- it's an additional $8. And, not all films use the new technology.

The next show coming out with the vibrating chair technology is "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides."

"In our Rochester Hills location, on Barkley Circle in Rochester Hills, we actually have D-Box 3D. So, Pirates of the Caribbean will be in D-Box 3D over there," Daniels said.

"It just makes it a little bit different from what you always do, so if you're game, you should definitely give it a try," she continued.
