Godbee: "No Evidence In That Building"

DETROIT (WWJ) - One week after Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy calls for an independent State Police investigation, Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee says "no critical evidence" was compromised.

WWJ's Stephanie Davis was on the scene when Godbee stated: "I completely agree with the course of action taken by Prosecutor Kym Worthy ... the public has to have full confidence, that there is absolutely no evidence in the building," says Godbee.

Newspaper reports last week indicated that there were pictures, case files, and even ammunition left in the building.

Godbee says the department's own internal affairs unit had started its own investigation back in April. And he says they confiscated only two items: a cap gun and a non-working semi automatic weapon.

"From our preliminary investigation there was no absolutely no evidence that was in that building, I repeat, there was absolutely no evidence in that building, there was a complete accounting for everything that was in the building that should have been moved, relative to evidence," says Godbee.

Godbee explains that the ammunition pictured on the floors of the office building were "test fire rounds" not evidence.

The Crime Lab was shut down in 2008 at the request of the prosecutor's office because of mishandled evidence.
