Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute Receives Award of Excellence from Health Care Weekly Review: The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit said Monday it had been selected the winner of the 2010 Award of Excellence in the Specialty Hospitals category by Health Care Weekly Review. For the fourth consecutive year, Health Care Weekly Review has recognized Michigan's heath care institutions annually for the Award of Excellence in four categories: Full Service Hospitals; Specialty Hospitals; Nursing/Medical Schools; and Excellent Administrators. The awards are sponsored by the Michigan State Medical Society. Karmanos has set itself apart as a specialty hospital because of its exceptional, specialized medical team who only treat cancer – all forms of cancer. It is one of only 40 National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the United States and is the only hospital in Michigan solely dedicated to fighting cancer. Karmanos has been ranked most preferred hospital for cancer care in southeast Michigan for four consecutive years, according to the National Research Corp. Patients who come to Karmanos have access to approximately 100 cancer-fighting therapies they cannot find anywhere else in Michigan. These new drugs provide hope to patients who have exhausted other treatment avenues by giving them the opportunity to take part in clinical trials that pave the way to future cancer treatments. Karmanos' Phase I Clinical Trials Program is one of only 14 NCI-funded Phase I programs in the United States and Canada and the only program of its kind in Michigan. More at www.karmanos.org.
