Prosecutor Believes New Detroit Crime Lab Is On Its Way

DETROIT (WWJ) - Exactly when it will happen remains an unknown, but Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy feels very strongly that Detroit will have a new police Crime Lab. The Detroit Police, however, won't be running the new lab.

" I have been a part of the collorative meetings and I think we are coming to one goal, and that there should be a new crime lab run by the Michigan State Police in the county seat," said Worthy.

Worthy doesn't expect the new crime lab to be in operation until after a State Police investigation into the way evidence like un-processed rape kits, live ammunition and blood samples were abandoned in the old building are investigated.

The former crime lab was ordered shut down in 2008 by then Detroit Mayor Kenneth Cockerel Jr.

The new crime lab will be housed in the Detroit Police Department's new headquarters in the old MGM Grand Casino building.
