Man Accused In Detroit Officer's Death Arraigned

DETROIT (WWJ) - The wrong-way driver accused of running down a Detroit police officer in Greektown will be arraigned Tuesday.

The court appearance for Saddam Mohsin comes a day after the prosecutor added charges to the case because Officer Charles Armour died from his injuries -- nearly a week after being hit.

Mohsin's attorney Leon Weiss says a request for a psychiatric exam likely will suspend the case for a while.

"His behavior prior to the event, during the event, and certainly in my contact with him subsequent, gives me great concern as to whether he can understand the nature of the charges against him and assist his council, which is the criteria for competency," Weiss said.

Mohsin is facing numerous charges -- including first degree murder.

Weiss, doesn't think murder charges are warranted.

"It's my understanding he died from respiratory complications, and whether or not these orthopedic injuries led to that or if he had a previously existing condition, I don't know," Weiss said.

Mohsin was expected to appear in court at 1 p.m. Stay with WWJ Newsradio 950 for the latest on this story.
