Avila, One Of 4 Tigers To Make All-Star Roster

DETROIT (WWJ) - The 82nd annual Major League Baseball mid-summer classic game will see Avila get the start behind the plate on July 12 at Chase Field in Phoenix, as determined by fan balloting results released Sunday afternoon.

Alex Avila passed Russell Martin for the American League starting spot in All-Star Game, joining Miguel Cabrera, Jose Valverde and Justin Verlander.

Tigers' fans will get to see Verlander, Cabrera and closing pitcher Valverde on the A.L. roster as reserves.  This is the second consecutive season the three have made the All-Star list and the third time for starting pitcher Justin Verlander.

According to MLive.com there might be a sixth All-Star selection.

Shortstop Jhonny Peralta, who is batting .311 with 14 homers and 48 RBIs, might be a candidate to replace starter Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees. Jeter has been on the disabled list since June 13 with a strained right calf, but is in the midst of a minor-league rehab assignment.
