Awards and Certifications From July 12

DMC Named 2011 Most Wired Hospital: The Detroit Medical Center has again been recognized as one of the nation's "Most Wired" hospitals, according to the results of the 2011 "Most Wired" Survey and Benchmarking Study released in the July issue of Hospitals & Health Networks magazine. The survey awarded hospitals nationwide, and of the 12 Michigan hospitals awarded, DMC was one of the two that are Detroit-based. DMC began its transformation to electronic medical record in 2006 and by October 2007, EMR was fully implemented throughout all DMC hospitals. In May of this year, DMC was among one of the first in the region to apply for government incentive funding for meaningful use of its electronic medical record. Hospitals & Health Networks' Most Wired Survey, conducted between Jan. 15 and March 15, asked hospitals and health systems nationwide to answer questions regarding their IT initiatives. Respondents completed 530 surveys, representing 1,388 hospitals, or roughly 24 percent of all U.S. hospitals. The July H&HN cover story detailing results is available at www.hhnmag.com. The Detroit Medical Center operates eight hospitals and one institute, including DMC Children's Hospital of Michigan, DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital, DMC Harper University Hospital, DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital, DMC Hutzel Women's Hospital, DMC Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan, DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital, DMC Surgery Hospital and DMC Cardiovascular Institute.  The 2011 Most Wired Survey is conducted in cooperation with McKesson Corp., HIT Exchange, the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME), and the American Hospital Association.

REMC Staffer Named Internet2 K20 Initiative Innovator: Merit Network Inc. in Ann Arbor Tuesday congratulated Mike Richardson of Michigan's Regional Education Media Center 1 for being recognized as an Internet2 K20 Initiative Innovator. Internet2's Anchor Innovators Program highlights individuals from within the Internet2 K20 Initiative community who have exhibited excellence in technology support of community anchor institutions such as K-12 schools, libraries, community colleges, museums, science centers, and other cultural organizations. REMC 1 serves the schools of Copper Country Intermediate School District  and Gogebic-Ontonagon ISD in Michigan's Western Upper Peninsula. It provides centralized technology services including networking, Internet access, security, compliance, reporting and more. Through a partnership with Merit Network, REMC 1 is able to deliver services to the schools of the Marquette-Alger ISD and most recently schools in Dickinson-Iron ISD. As Merit completes its REACH-3MC network build-out in these regions, REMC 1 will be able to increase the number of schools it serves in these ISDs and enhance its service offerings. Richardson believes that Internet2 was impressed with REMC 1's ability to leverage investments in hardware and share fiber assets across multiple Intermediate School Districts. Because of the collaboration REMC 1 and Merit have helped to facilitate, advanced technologies are able to reach far more students in the Western UP and at a lower cost. A recent breakthrough Richardson describes is REMC 1's bandwidth pool implementation. Utilizing equipment from Procera, REMC#1 has been able to aggregate bandwidth "pools" on a per individual school district and per ISD basis. This has enabled successful prioritization and efficiency of network utilization from an operations standpoint. REMC 1 has been Merit member since 1996. Mike Richardson has long been an active member in the Merit Community, serving on the Merit Advisory Council for many years.
