Police Clear Suspicious Package From Woodward

DETROIT (WWJ) - A suspicious package left near the Chase Bank building caused a commotion in Downtown Detroit Thursday morning.

Detroit Police Department Bomb Squad unit head Sergeant Matthew Taylor says the package was left near the building at Woodward Avenue and Congress.

"The package was located right up there on the front of the porch, off to the side of the staircase. It was a good-sized suitcase," Taylor said.

Homeland Security and Border Patrol officers assisted Detroit Police in blocking off traffic along Woodward Avenue from Congress to Jefferson and for a few blocks to the east of Woodward.

The Detroit Bomb Squad fired a water bomb at the package before suiting up to detonate the package.

Businesses in the surrounding area remained open, although police were sure to keep people away from the situation.

A man, some said was a tourist, claimed ownership of the package. He was questioned and released. No injuries were reported.
