Beat The Heat At Local Cooling Centers

DETROIT (WWJ) - It's a scorcher  -- and the hot temps aren't stopping anytime soon.  To provide a safe and cool environment for those who may not have another option, local communities are opening locations as cooling centers. Residents can visit to enjoy air-conditioned comfort and protection from the heat.

The Livonia Community Recreation Center's Vern Waara says the facility could accommodate about 25 to 30 people overnight if necessary.

"Through the summer we close at 10 o'clock, but we will staff and have people come in and we set up cots for people to stay overnight and offer a shower for them ... we try to take care of our residents," Waara said.

The Office of Public Health Emergency Preparedness reminds residents that when temperatures rise above 90 degrees, everyone is at risk, but the elderly and the very young are most susceptible to heat and heat-related illness. Signs of heat-related illness include headache, dizziness, nausea, heavy sweating, confusion and pale or flushed skin. The American Red Cross recommends the following treatment for persons with heat-related illness:

  • Move the victim to a cool place.
  • Give cool water to drink.
  • Apply ice packs or cool wet cloths to the skin.
  • If a victim refuses water, vomits, or loses consciousness, call 9-1-1 immediately
