Week-Long Heat Wave Hovers Over Metro Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) - The hot, humid weather is sticking around Metro Detroit all week - with temps expected to stay in the mid-90s. The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory, in effect until Thursday evening.

An Excessive Heat Watch and Air Quality Alert were also issued for the area. (Click here for the latest weather alerts).

Maximum temperatures are expected to reach and exceed 90 degrees for many areas on Tuesday. The combination of high heat and humidity will cause heat index values to push into the middle and upper 90s on Tuesday and exceed 105 by Thursday.

The height of the heat wave is expected to impact the region on Wednesday and Thursday. High temperatures on both days are expected to range between 95 and 100 degrees.

Strenuous outdoor activity may lead to heat injuries such as heat stroke, heat exhaustion or heat cramps.

To provide a safe and cool environment for those who may not have another option, local communities are opening several locations as cooling centers. Residents can visit to enjoy air-conditioned comfort and protection from the heat. - See the complete list here -

Forecast details from the WWJ Weather Team:

Tuesday - Partly sunny through mid morning...then becoming mostly sunny. A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 PM. Highs 91 to 95...with a heat index around 100. North winds 5 to 10 mph...turning to northeast. Chance of rain 20 percent.

Rest of Tuesday - Partly sunny. A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 PM. Highs 91 to 95 ...with a heat index around 100. Northeast winds 5 to 10 mph...turning to east late. Chance of rain 20 percent.

Wednesday - Mostly sunny. Hot and humid with highs 93 to 97...with a heat index around 100. Light and variable winds...becoming south 5 to 15 mph...then turning to southwest.

Wednesday Night - Mostly clear. Lows 75 to 79. Southwest winds 5 to 10 mph.

Thursday - Mostly sunny. Hot and humid with highs 96 to 100...with a heat index around 105. Southwest winds 5 to 15 mph.

Thursday Night - Partly cloudy. A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms. Lows 78 to 82. Chance of rain 20 percent.

Friday - Partly sunny. A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Hot and humid with highs 92 to 96. Chance of rain 30 percent.
