John Glenn High School Football Team Holds Strongman Competition

WESTLAND (WWJ) - Who's the fittest of them all?  We'll find out Friday night at Westland's John Glenn High School Strongman Competition.

Coach Tim Hardin says the football team started a new conditioning program with a new trainer this year after their workout became too routine.

"He kind of instituted this kind of strongman, Ironman type of program and competition where we have guys flipping big, huge tires and using sledgehammers and sandbags, and we made it a big competition among our players," Hardin said. "Our varsity guys, you know, our varsity bigger guys, they're flipping 300 pound, 400 pound tires."

After weeks of training, the team will compete under Friday Night Lights at 9 pm, to crown the school's first Strongman champion.

"What they're going to do is try and go through like an obstacle course, flipping the tires and stuff, and they try to get the fastest time. And then at the end, we'll have a winner who will be getting a trophy," the coach said.

The school is encouraging everyone to attend the event. Tickets cost $5 at the gate.

"You'll see our guys get real crazy about it. They get real hyped up and its a high enthusiastic period and we're really fired up to do this event," Hardin said.

John Glenn High School is located at 36105 Marquette Street in Westland. (Click for map)
