Study: Physical Fitness Impacts Risk Of Developing Dementia

DETROIT (WWJ) - There's more evidence that the benefits of keeping fit extend far beyond just the physical. Improving and maintaining your all-around health may lower your risk for developing dementia.

Canadian researchers studied more than 7,000 dementia-free people over 65-year-old. Participants were evaluated at five years and 10 years for types of dementia and questioning about their general health.

The study found older adults, without health problems, had an 18 percent change of getting the disorder. But, the risk of developing dementia increased to between 30 and 40 percent for those with eight to 12 health problems.
