Will Temps Break 90 For Seventh Straight Day?

DETROIT (WWJ) - Sick of the hot weather yet? Temperatures are expected to reach into the 90's again Saturday and if that happens, it will be the seventh straight day in the 90's.

State community health officials are reminding Michiganders to use caution at the temperatures hover in the 90s with a heat index near 100 degrees.

Kelly Niebel, of the State Community Health Department, said individuals need most to guard against dehydration.

"Headache, moist and pale skin, feeling nauseous, dizzy weak and just generally exhausted. And that of course, if not treated can turn into heat stroke, which can be deadly. And 911 should be called if someone is running a body temperature that can get as high as say 105," she said.

In order to avoid heat-related illnesses, individuals should use an air conditioner or go to a cool place, such as a basement. If you can't cool off that way, several community buildings have opened as cooling centers. (See the full list here). You could also head to the local movie theatre or shopping mall where air conditioning is provided.

Other ways to try to stay cool include taking a cold shower or bath, keeping the curtains and blinds closed to block out the sun, and avoiding physical activity.

If you must be in the sun, Niebel said you should wear thin and light-colored clothing, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen with a SPF of 15 or more.
