Fatal Semi Crash Blocks Traffic On I-94

DETROIT (WWJ) - A collision between two semi trucks on I-94 east of Jackson left one of the drivers dead. Jackson County Sheriff Steven Rand said it happened just after 7 a.m. Tuesday morning.

"It was two eastbound semis," said Rand. "One appeared to either be slowing or stopping on the roadway when a second semi approached.  It looks like it was at the posted speed, or very near that, and rear-ended the semi either stopping or slowing on the roadway."

Rand said the driver of the semi was killed as he rear-ended the other semi.  The man who was killed is from Michigan, but police aren't releasing further details.

The driver of the semi that was hit was expected to be okay.

The semi crash, which occurred in a construction zone, has been adding to backups in the area.

"We have had already had one secondary accident," said Rand. "Traffic is slow in the area in both directions until this is cleaned up."

I-94 near Race Road has been completely reopened in both directions.
