Local Company Recalls Cheese Products

CLINTON TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - A Detroit-area company is voluntarily recalling some cheeses because they have the potential to be contaminated by antibiotic residues.

S. Serra Cheese Co. announced the recall in a statement distributed Monday by the Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development. Included are Fresh Ricotta, Fresh Mozzarella, Mozzarella Block, and Provolone Stick cheeses manufactured Aug. 1.

The cheeses being recalled by the company, based in Clinton Township, were sold to bakeries, delis and restaurants in the Detroit and Grand Rapids areas.

People who are allergic to antibiotics may have adverse reactions, but there were no reports of that happening. The Agriculture Department discovered the problem during the investigation of a complaint about a milk supplier who didn't properly document raw milk testing.
