The 100 Greatest Cars Of All Time

SANTA MONICA, CA (WWJ) -- Just in time for the Woodward Dream Cruise, the car that inspired the Beach Boys to sing about their "Little Deuce Coupe," and cruised through American Graffiti, has been crowned the "Greatest Car of All Time."

"This car has defined American culture for 80 years," read the description of the 1932 Ford V-8, which topped the Edmunds Insideline.com list of 100 greatest cars of all time.

"That was an easy one for us, I have to say," said editor-in-chief Scott Oldham.

There was a lot of debate about other vehicles on the very diverse list, but not about which vehicle should stand at the top.

"We slotted it into the number one spot early on, and it never moved," said Oldham.

The list is a diverse one, including the Taurus, Prius and Explorer.  Vehicle's were judged on their significance.

"Coming up with our list of the greatest 100 cars of all time wasn't easy, but it was a lot of fun," said Oldham, who told WWJ AutoBeat Reporter Jeff Gilbert that there was months of debate over which cars should be on the list, followed by a lengthy debate over where they should be placed.

The 1959 Austin Mini finished second, followed by the classic 55 Chevy, and the original Volkswagen Beetle.

"Produced around the world for 65 years, the air-cooled original Beetle was the first car for generations of drivers," read the description.  "May be the most beloved car ever."

Cruisers will certainly find a lot of their favorites on the list, including the 63 Corvette Sting Ray, the 64 Mustang and the 64 GTO.

Oldham says the list has inspired a lot of comments, which means people are passionate about their cars.

"It's been so successful, we're thinking about doing some others, like the 100 best American cars."
