Farmington Hills Presents Women's Self-Defense Seminar

FARMINGTON (WWJ) - If you're a woman and want to know how to better protect yourself, the City of Farmington Hills is putting on a seminar just for people like you.

The Farmington Hills/Farmington Emergency Preparedness Commission (EPC) will present a women's self-defense seminar on Saturday, September 24 from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. at the Costick Center, located at 28600 Eleven Mile Road between Middlebelt and Inkster.

Through a series of close-range drills, participants will learn both situational awareness skills and self-defense skills. The class will be taught by Jeff Duncan, master instructor and sixth degree black belt; his wife Connie, second degree black belt and chief instructor; and additional female black belt instructors from Farmington Martial Arts.

This is the tenth time that the EPC has hosted a women's self-defense seminar and close to 900 women have participated in this popular event.

Over the past five years, these seminars have raised thousands of dollars for HAVEN, an Oakland County crisis and counseling center for victims of domestic violence, and hundreds more for the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign.

The self-defense seminar is open to all women ages 11 and up. An $8 registration fee will cover class supplies and also a tax-deductible donation to HAVEN.

Advance registration is required. To register, call the Costick Center at 248-473-1800.
