Wayne County Commissioners Approve Budget

DETROIT (WWJ) - Wayne County Commissioners have given their unanimous approval to County Executive Robert Ficano's $530 million general fund budget.

Ficano said declining revenue do to falling property values forced him to cut $50 million from the budget.

"It's difficult times, and we have to do more with less," said Ficano. "It's not easy, but we've been negotiating also with the treasurer, Andy Dillon, looking at some new ways we think we can leverage dollars."

"If we're able to do this, we think that's going to help school districts as well as other municipalities. So, we have some unique ideas," he said.

The budget includes funding for the Port Authority and provisions to keep the Chandler Park Aquatic Center open with a private management company taking over its operation in May.

Wayne County's budget year begins October 1st.
