Compuware Opens Lafayette Community Garden

DETROIT (WWJ) - Something new and "green" is sprouting up in downtown Detroit Wednesday. Compuware is officially opening its new Lafayette community garden.

Meg Harris of Compuware said the garden is located behind the Lafayette Coney Island building.

"I describe it as an edible landscape because it's a park space but it's also, instead of having typical annuals and perennials we actually have vegetables growing there. And then these vegetables get donated to Gleaners Community Food Bank."

Harris said 200 pounds of vegetables have already been donated.

"This season we're donating to Gleaners but we're definitely looking to get involved with donating to other places, once we get a better sense of what our yield is going to be. And then also for volunteers that get involved, we definitely will always have extras. So, as a volunteer, you can come and partake in some of the veggies we have here."

The official unveiling event takes place at 11:30 a.m. and is open to the public. Compuware Executive Chairman Peter Karmanos is expected at the event.
