Police: Man Stabbed Himself, Reported Fake Robbery

TRAVERSE CITY (AP) - Traverse City police say a man falsely reported a robbery and stabbed himself to make his story more convincing - all because he didn't want his family to know he'd lost $1,000 at a local casino.

The 50-year-old man, whose name wasn't released, initially told officers he was approached by two men wearing baseball caps demanding money. He said he refused and one of the assailants stabbed him in the abdomen.

He was admitted to Munson Medical Center as police with a tracking dog tried to find the supposed robbers.

But Friday morning, Capt. Brian Heffner reported the man had acknowledged fabricating the story and stabbing himself.

Heffner says a report has been sent to the Grand Traverse County prosecutor, who could authorize charges of filing a false report.
