Power Outages Delay First Day Of School

FERNDALE (WWJ) - Ferndale students are getting an extended summer vacation. The first day of school has been postponed because of lingering power outages and storm cleanup.

Several school buildings reportedly are still without power.  And, because of downed power lines and debris scattered throughout the city, school officials are concerned about the safety of students who may need to walk to class.

Some students in Detroit will also have an extra day off, as Detroit Public Schools Officials say Emerson and Vernor elementary schools are closed Tuesday due to power outages.

Meantime, thousands are still without power and cleaning up after weekend storms. The DTE Energy Outage Map shows scattered outages throughout the region, concentrated in Ferndale, Royal Oak and Hazel Park. For some, the lights have been off for more than 60 hours already.

DTE crews are working to get the 12,000 homes and businesses back online by the end of the day Tuesday, although they say some customers may not have power returned until Wednesday.

DTE Officials said storms that rolled through the area Saturday left approximately 120,000 DTE Energy electric customers without power.
