New Stretch Of Bike Path Opened In Macomb Twp.

MACOMB COUNTY (WWJ) - Congresswoman Candice Miller says some people may believe they should not have put in millions of dollars for a non-motorized pathway that runs some 24 miles through Macomb County.

But Miller says it's a fabulous investment in a state and country facing obesity issues: "I see them as long skinny parks ... I think they are important from a quality of life standpoint," said Miller.

Millions of dollars, from the federal, state and local level were spent on Macomb Orchard Trail near Richmond.

Representative Miller says the new trail is not only a draw to the county, but good for a state battling obesity.

"Eventually we would like to connect the bike paths throughout the entire county, going along the shoreline at Selfridge, we've got that ... through Chesterfield Twp. out from Metropolitan beach, up to Stony Creek this is all in our master plan, so we are doing bits of it as we can afford it," the Congresswoman said.

"There was a lot of local support ... it's really been a community project," said Miller.

The non-motorized pathway that runs from Richmond on the east to Pontiac on the west ... connecting communities on the way.

The Congresswoman says she hopes this isn't the end of the line, they hope to connect the pathway further in to Macomb County and along Selfridge Air National Guard base.

The official ribbon cutting ceremony is being rescheduled due to Monday's rain.
