Habitat Homes Available For Detroit Families In Need

DETROIT (WWJ) - It's a chance to own a brand new home in Detroit at drastically reduced payments.

Sandra Cobb, Habitat for Humanity Chief of Community Development, said they're accepting applications for more than a dozen new homes in a neighborhood on the city's east side.

"We have ranches, three or four bedrooms; colonial, three bedrooms ... you've got a living room and dining room ... 1,150-square-foot," Cobb said.  "There is a full basement, low-matinence vinyl siding. There's a one car garage. It may be either attached or detached," she said.

"A lot of our homeowners, it's great for them. The kids, you know, get their own bedroom. They get a chance to play in their own backyard," said Cobb. "It's a great opportunity and many people just don't know that we're out there."

Cobb said the new and rehabbed homes in a neighborhood called Morningside Commons near Alter and Mack.

To quality for the zero-interest homes, you must be in need, but able to afford the $600 monthly mortgage payments.

Those who qualify must take part in a new homeowners' training program and agree to hours of work on the home building.
