Police Investigate Nails Strewn Along UP Road

MELSTRAND (AP) - Authorities believe thousands of nails are intentionally being dropped along a stretch of highway in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

WLUC-TV reports that more than 60 cars, trucks and motorcycles have received flats from the nails on H-58 in Melstrand, about 47 miles east of Marquette.

Building nails have been found along the Alger County roadway.

Officials say they started finding nails about a month ago and initially believed they were strewn across the roadway accidentally. Now they believe the act is intentional.

The manager of a motorcycle shop in Marquette says tires have had to be replaced on more than 20 bikes. One motorcycle owner had seven nails in one tire.
