ROYAL OAK (WWJ) – It will be hard to miss the fire-breathing dragon sculpture at Fifth and Washington Avenue this weekend as part of Royal Oak’s Chalk and Chocolate Art Tour, starting with Thursday night’s kickoff gala at Fifth Avenue restaurant.

Organizer Peggy Goodwin told WWJ Newsradio 950’s Ron Dewey it’s a weekend to inspire people and benefit art in their schools.

“We’ll bring together professional artists, with Royal Oak High School students … and dress up Royal Oak in chalk,” she said. ” Simultaneously, when you go into restaurants and stores with all kinds of chocolate delights and see different specials on the menu that celebrate chocolate for Sweetest Day weekend.”

Proceeds from the weekend’s events will benefit the Royal Oak Neighborhood Schools Arts Curriculum Fund. Studies find that youth involved in the arts do better academically.
