Occupy Detroit Group Camping In City Park
DETROIT (AP) - A group protesting the actions of U.S. banks and other financial institutions amid the country's economic crisis is beginning its first full day of occupation in a downtown Detroit park.
Helen Stockton says Saturday that about 200 members of Occupy Detroit camped overnight in Grand Circus Park.
She says the group is prepared to remain "as long as it takes to effect change."
Stockton and several hundred others participated Friday in a downtown rally. Similar events are planned Saturday in Lansing, Marquette and Kalamazoo.
The event and others across the state and country follow Occupy Wall Street protests in New York. Protesters there have camped out for a month in a plaza. They blame Wall Street and corporate interests for the economic troubles felt by all but the wealthiest Americans.
