Hungry Detroit Family Of 10 Receives New Home

DETROIT (WWJ) - A family of 10 living in a house without doors, beds or even a kitchen in Detroit got the surprise of their life.

The Wilson family asked the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries only for food to help feed their eight children, but they were surprised with a new home.

Dr. Chad Audi, president of the Mission Ministries said they found out the family was renting an unlivable home. There were no doors, no kitchen and no beds.

"They did not have a stove. They did not have a refrigerator. They did not have mattresses for their children. They lived on the floor. Just one couch and not in good condition, and a lot of mold," he said.

Audi told WWJ Newsradio 950's Laure Bonnell the Wilsons are hard working couple who suffered some financial bad luck over the past several years.

"They're trying every day. The mother works as a nursing assistant. The father works as a security guard at a company and they're both very active in the church," Audi said.

Dr. Audi said they found a vacant home on Webb street near 14 Mile Road and renovated it with the help of volunteers. The furnished home has four bedrooms, a new kitchen and a backyard.

"There is six girls and two boys. So, we put the two boys in one room and three babies, three girls, in each room and the mother and father in one room," he said.

Dr. Audi said the family was thrilled to learn their mortgage has been taken care of, too.
