Man Fatally Struck By Train In Holland

HOLLAND (AP) - Authorities say a man believed to be a Hope College student has died after being struck by a freight train near the edge of the school's campus in southwestern Michigan.

The school said in a statement that the man was struck about 8:45 p.m. Monday by the CSX train at a crossing near the school's DePree Art Center. His name wasn't immediately released.

Members of the Hope College community planned to gather Tuesday at Dimnent Memorial Chapel for prayer and reflection.

Police say the train was going about 20 mph when the man was spotted walking. The engineer tried to stop using emergency brakes.
