WSU Gets $1.5M Grant To Study Marijuana Use Among HIV-AIDS Patients
DETROIT (WWJ) - A Wayne State University professor has received a $1.5 million grant from the National Institute of Drug Abuse.
Dr. Mark Greenwald, professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience at WSU, will be conducting two studies involving marijuana use among people being treated for HIV-AIDS.
WWJ's Pat Sweeting asked Greenwald if this study will help set national policy:
"Well, I think that may be wishful thinking to believe that science always informs policy -- lawmakers will do what they want with the information, including ignore it at times," Greenwald said.
Greenwald said it is possible the results of this study could influence states that are considering medical marijuana use laws.
"We're going to get extensive background information on these individuals, including not only their basic identifying information, but also their patterns of use of both legal substances, including smoking and alcohol (and) illegal substances including marijuana," said Greenwald.
The second study will track the behavior of the studies' subjects.
