Actor Denis Leary's 'Burn' To Benefit Detroit Firefighters

DETROIT (WWJ) - The Detroit Fire Department is in the spotlight, thanks to actor Dennis Leary. He's the executive producer behind a new documentary "Burn."

Leary, on the CBS Early Show, says Detroit's fire department has been especially hard-hit in recent years:

"In these times you can imagine how very difficult it is for any fire department. In Detroit they were already under the gun, when the recession hit -- it just made it 10 times worse, so this department is financially strapped and the amount of fires that are being set in that city is outrageous," said Leary.

Leary says cash still needs to be raised to complete the project and to make sure the film hits the big screen: "We're raising money to help finish this film," said Leary. "The money that my foundation raises from this will go directly to the Detroit Fire Department."

Production on the documentary is at the halfway point, Leary said.

Leary told Early Show viewers that the work of the Detroit firefighters is amazing and said he's impressed by the dedication shown by the department.
