Newt Gingrich On His Electability: Americans Can Decipher Truth From Lies

ROMULUS (WWJ) - Former House speaker and current GOP presidential hopeful, Newt Gingrich, is spending an extra day in Metro Detroit, hoping to sell Michiganders on his vision for the country.

Gingrich said Wednesday night's debate at Oakland University was a step in the right direction for his campaign.

"We raised more money yesterday than we raised in July, just to give you some idea of what's happening. All of its online from people who voluntarily are showing up. So, I hope people who get this news report will decide to go online and give money," he said.

Gingrich said his showing in the debate was a step in the right direction for his campaign, but he said it's only one debate.

"Saturday night in the Bingham Farm policy on national security, I hope we'll take another step. But it's one day at a time, you just keep moving forward," he said.

Gingrich told an audience of about 100 people at Metro Airport that he represents the responsibility party, being the only house speaker to oversee a balanced budget. He also said the American people will differentiate the substance from the lies when it comes to his electability.

"At some point, you all will have to come to grips with the fact that the American people actually are worried about the economy, about the future of the country, about the rise of China, about a Washington that's out of control, and they actually want somebody who has the substance of knowledge and the substance of experience to actually solve the problems. And that may be a very, very high value to them this year, more than almost any other year in our lifetime, because the problems are so deep," said Gingrich.

His press secretary said if Gingrich gets the nomination, he'll be out to win Detroit next fall.
