GRANDVILLE (AP) – Benjamin “Benny” McCoy, a player for the Detroit Tigers in the 1930s, has died in western Michigan. He was 96.
McCoy’s family believes he was the oldest living Tiger at the time of his death. The Grand Rapids Press says he lived in Grandville near Grand Rapids and died Wednesday, his birthday.
McCoy played two seasons as an infielder for the Tigers and two more for the Philadelphia Athletics before serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Baseball-Reference.com says he played in 62 games for the Tigers and had a batting average of .295. He played in 275 games with Philadelphia.
