Detroit Hosts 'Super' College Fair

DETROIT (WWJ) - It's the biggest college fair in Detroit, and offers a tremendous opportunity for parents, college-bound students to gain valuable information on getting into college.

Great Grace Temple and the National Scholarship Service are hosting "The Detroit City-Wide 'Super' College Fair" with more than 70 college recruiters providing answers on admissions, scholarships, financial aid, testing, and other matters.

"Not only are we going to have those colleges here, but also we have workshop sessions that relate to how to conquer the ACT test, which is a test for students to get into college and get scholarships, there are workshops on how to be a college parent, how to be a college student," said Detroit School Board President Tyrone Winfrey.

Representatives from some of the nation's top colleges from historically black colleges and universities to the University of Michigan, Clark Atlanta University, Michigan State, Purdue University, and many others will be present.

But Winfrey said everyone is invited to the fair, which is different from others because of the workshops it offers.

"The preparation for not only high school students, but middle school and elementary school students, I think is at its utmost at this point. A lot of times, when we look at students when the get to the twelfth grade, there are things they may lack and they basically say that you can't go back and recover those things. So, these sessions will relate to how to prepare for college and higher education overall."

The college fair is absolutely free and open to everyone. The fair takes place on Saturday, Nov. 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Greater Grace Temple, located at 23500 W. Seven Mile Road in Detroit.
