Union Rejects CMU Contract Terms

MOUNT PLEASANT (AP) - The union representing faculty at Central Michigan University has rejected contract terms offered by the school's administration.

The Saginaw News reports that Faculty Association President Laura Frey said Friday that the contract is unacceptable.

The Mount Pleasant school said in a release that the contract terms accepted recommendations from an independent fact finder.

Both sides received the fact finder's non-binding report last week. The report reviewed issues that included salary adjustments and health care benefits. The fact finder recommended the university's proposal on both of those issues.

Professors went on strike for most of Aug. 22, the first day of classes for the fall semester. A judge ordered them back to work but they are still allowed to demonstrate.

Professors say they have been without a contract since June 30, with disputes continuing over wages and other issues.

Central Michigan has about 28,000 students, including roughly 21,000 enrolled at the Mount Pleasant campus.
