Tawakkul Karman: Yemeni Nobel Peace Prize Winner To Speak At U-M Campuses
DEARBORN/ANN ARBOR (WWJ) - The first Arab woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize is giving two public speeches in southeastern Michigan.
Yemeni Nobel Prize Winner Tawakkul Karman will speak Sunday night at Dearborn's Ford Community & Performing Arts Center and on Monday, she'll be at Rackham Auditorium at the University of Michigan.
Karman was a prominent critic of the president of Yemen before the mass uprising erupted against him last January. She encourages Arab-Muslim women to pursue equal rights and says the way to do that is by toppling dictatorships.
Karman will give a free public speech, entitled "Women in the Arab Spring" Monday from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at U-M's Rackham Auditorium in Ann Arbor. It is open to students and the public.
There will be a question and answer session following Karman's talk.
