Police: Man Left Children At Accident Scene

DETROIT (WWJ) - An Imlay City man is facing second degree child abuse charges after police say he fled the scene of an accident, leaving his children in the car.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged 28-year-old Nicholas John Hodges with two counts of second degree child abuse, false report of a felony, leaving the scene of an injury accident while at fault, reckless driving, and driving while license suspended.

Police say around 2:45 p.m. Wednesday, Hodges picked up his two children, ages three months and three years, from their mother's home on Phillips Street in Detroit and was going to take them to the store.

Police say Hodges put his children in car seats, but failed to secure them. Hodges then reportedly engaged in reckless driving that caused another vehicle to strike his car. It is further alleged that he endangered his children by crossing a median and then left them in the car at Phillip and East Warren when he fled the scene.

Hodges was arraigned Friday in 36th District Court and received a bond of $70,000. He's due back in court on Dec. 1.
