Northern Michigan Soldier Killed In Afghanistan

BOYNE CITY (AP) - The family of a northern Michigan soldier says the 20-year-old has died while serving in Afghanistan. Army Pvt. 2nd Class Jack L. Diener was a 2009 graduate of Boyne City High School and was deployed about two months ago.

Donna Diener says a military representative notified her family Tuesday of her grandson's death. She tells the Petoskey News-Review that details about the time and location of his death weren't yet known.

The Pentagon hadn't publicly announced the death by 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Jack Diener was the son of Jack and Val Diener of Boyne City.

High school Principal Karen Jarema says Diener played football and baseball and wrestled at the school. She says he spent his junior year as an exchange student in Denmark.
