Flu Shot Immunization May Be A Matter Of Education

DETROIT (WWJ) - Have you gotten a flu shot yet?  The Deputy secretary for the U.S. department of health and human services center for faith-based and neighborhood partnerships, Akasia Salatti, says education is key.

Salatti says the height of the flu season will be January, and it takes a couple of weeks after you get a  flu shot for your body to build up immunity to the flu.      She was in Dearborn this week helping with a free vaccination clinic.

"We really want the participation and the help of people in the community, faith leaders in particular to let people know the importance of getting the flu shot," said Salatti.

Right now there are 30 states that are reporting cases of the flu ... and the peak doesn't hit until January and February.

Dr Anne Shu-kit of the CDC says being bed ridden during the holidays is something to be avoided.

Each year 5 to 20%  of the U.S. Population suffer from influenza.

The shots are recommended for young children, pregnant women, older people and those will chronic conditions like asthma, diabetes, along with heart and lung disease.
