Law School Plans To Open Immigrant Rights Clinic
Ann Arbor (WWJ/AP)- Cooley Law School plans to open an immigrant rights and civil advocacy clinic at its Ann Arbor campus in January.
The clinic will offer free legal help when it opens in January.
The clinic will address a range of issues immigrants face, from landlord-tenant disputes and unfair wage claims to problems with their immigration status.
Cooley officials met with lawyers, judges and community leaders in Washtenaw County to learn what free legal services were most needed.
Cooley associate professor Jason Eyster will supervise the students. He recently moved back to Michigan after supervising Ave Maria law school's immigrant rights clinic in Naples, Fla.
"In the United States, all individuals have certain protections regardless of their immigration status," said Eyster in a statement. "Here in Southeast Michigan, we have people from all over the world including Russia, China, Africa, and South America. Immigration law is a field that needs attorneys and I'm excited to offer my skills, not only to clients but to the students who will gain valuable experience by working in this clinic."
This will be the first in-house clinic at Cooley's Ann Arbor campus on Plymouth Road.
