Michiganders Take Advantage Of Secretary Of State Website

DETROIT (WWJ)  - Michigan's Secretary of State says more people are taking advantage of online services.

Speaking to Auto Show attendees at Cobo Center on Tuesday, Secretary of State Ruth Johnson said about half-a-million people have now renewed their license plate tabs and used other services at ExpressSOS.com.

The site was unveiled in mid-October.

Bruce Graham of Rochester used it to renew his driver's license.

"It saved me a bunch of time," Graham told WWJ Newsradio 950's Sandra McNeil. "It was able to get it done in about 10 minutes on my lunch hour at work versus having to drive to the office and, who knows, wait an hour in line and drive back to the office."

Johnson said she wishes more people would take advantage of the website.

"People have busy lives. They don't have time to wait in line," said Johnson. "So, for those people who do have to show up, we want the lines to be far shorter and then lots of convenience for those people who do have the ability to use the Internet and a charge card."

Johnson said 6.5 million still go to the Secretary of State each year. She said said more than half of those people could take care of their business online.
