Study: Mich. Could Trim Office Space To Cut Costs

LANSING (WWJ/AP) - An internal study finds that the state could save millions of dollars by shrinking employee work areas and consolidating space.

The report says office space occupied by about 40,000 state employees exceeds private industry standards. Currently, state offices range from 80 to 400 square feet. Cubicles range from 80 to 145 square feet.

The report says offices below the director level could be limited to 150 square feet and cubicles could be standardized at 64 square feet. Employees without offices could be limited to an eight-foot by eight-foot work space.

The state owns some office space and leases other space. Officials say down on leases also could help the state trim costs.

The Department of Technology, Management and Budget report will be presented to a legislative committee Tuesday.
