Lawrence Tech's Walker Awarded ESD 2012 Gold Award: Michigan's reputation as the hub for engineering is alive and well thanks to the talented professionals who, through their achievements and dedication, continue to move our state forward. This will be evident at 41st Annual Gold Award Event sponsored by The Engineering Society of Detroit and its affiliate council, and held on Thursday, Feb. 23 at the Dearborn Inn, Dearborn. The event will honor 30 individuals for their accomplishments, as well as this year's recipient of the Gold Award, Lawrence Technological University president Lewis N. Walker. Walker has served as president and CEO of Lawrence Tech since July 1, 2006, following five months of service as interim president. He joined the university in 1994 as provost. In 2003 he was appointed to the additional role of executive vice president, adding oversight of student services and business activities. In addition to holding three degrees from the University of Missouri-Columbia, including the PhD in electrical engineering, Walker is also a registered professional engineer, who was involved as principal investigator of numerous research contracts and has organized and presented many short courses and seminars on power system protection and power system dispatch operations. He also helped develop systems to communicate with deeply submerged submarines anywhere in the world. Walker serves as a director of the Detroit Economic Club, Automation Alley, the Detroit Regional Chamber, and the Skyline Club of Southfield. He serves on the executive board of the Detroit Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America. In 2008 he was appointed by the governor to Michigan's Higher Education Facilities Commission. The Gold Award is given to an individual who is collectively upheld by ESD's Affiliate Council for his or her outstanding contributions to the field of science and engineering. Joining Walker will be 30 individuals from all different skills and backgrounds, who were selected for their unique service and contributions to their industries. This event is open to the public.
