Detroit Receiving Hospital Gets $8M Expansion

DETROIT (WWJ) - Vanguard Health Systems is making another multi-million-dollar investment in the Detroit Medical Center.

Detroit Receiving Hospital is getting a new $8 million operating facility.

"If we're going to compete in what's going forward, we have got to have the finest facilities, and we have to operate the most efficiently," said Detroit Medical Center CEO Mike Duggan at Thursday morning's groundbreaking ceremony. "And what we're doing today in building a new modern operating facility, here at Receiving, positions us to be competitive for years to come."

Also on hand for the groundbreaking event was Detroit Mayor Dave Bing, who spoke about what this means for the city.

"This is a great day in the city of Detroit. Good things are happening, and the more than we can celebrate these kind of occasions and let the rest of the country know what we are doing -- Detroit's not dying," said Bing.

"What you're doing is providing a lifeline for a lot our citizen, not just in the city of Detroit but in Southeastern Michigan."

The expansion, which will have three new operating rooms and eight new post operative spaces, is scheduled for completion this fall.
