First Graders To Watch Practice, Eat Lunch And Listen To Ken Kal Read On Thursday

Detroit, MI… Approximately 55 first graders from Hiller Elementary School in Madison Heights, Mich., will be at the Red Wings' practice tomorrow, March 1, to attend radio play-by-play announcer Ken Kal's Reading Party and celebrate the first day of National Reading Month. The elementary students will have the unique opportunity to watch the 11 a.m. practice up close and then tour the press box to see where Kal sits when he calls Red Wings games for 97.1 The Ticket.

After practice and the press box tour, the students will head to the Olympia Club for lunch. By 12:30 p.m., Kal will join the group in the Olympia Club to read the book Percy the Parrot Passes the Puck to the group of students and then answer students' questions about hockey and the Red Wings. The book follows the adventures of a parrot that helps the losing home team after ruining the TV commercial during the hockey game's intermission.

The school will receive a handful of children's hockey books, including The ABC's of Detroit Red Wings Hockey, for the school's library and each student will receive a Red Wings fan pack to take home with them as a parting gift for attending Ken Kal's Reading Party.
